Member and Trustee Biographies

SUE BOWLER - MEMBER
 

Sue is the joint Director of Integrated Care at Guy’s and St Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust, with responsibility for adult community health services across Lambeth and Southwark. Sue is skilled in partnership working, managing and engaging stakeholders, project and performance management in the public sector.

ELIZABETH BROWN - MEMBER 

Elizabeth is a local resident who has been involved with The Trust since 2001 when the first of four children to attend started at The Charter School North Dulwich, one year after the school opened. From 2007, the year before the school converted to academy status, Elizabeth was vice-chair and then  became the Chair of the Local Governing Body and a Trustee in 2011. She became a Member of the Trust when it became a MAT in 2016.

Elizabeth was instrumental in the campaign to open a new Free School, The Charter School East Dulwich. 

MARION GIBBS CBE - MEMBER
 

A former HMI, Marion is also the retired headteacher of James Allen's Girls' School, an independent school in Dulwich. Marion received a CBE in 2012 for her partnership work between the state and independent sectors across South London, including the Southwark Schools Learning Partnership which she founded in 2003 for 10 Southwark secondary schools and which still flourishes today. She is currently also a Trustee of Classics for All and the Charleston Trust.

JOHN GODFREY -  Member Appointed Trustee and Member (ex-officio)

 

John was the Chair of Governors for The Charter School East Dulwich until November 2019. He is a consultant for data and technology companies helping them innovate and grow. John has lived in Dulwich all his life. He grew up in a home opposite The Charter School North Dulwich and is the parent of a child at The Charter School East Dulwich. John’s teaching degree and interest in education led to becoming a founder proposer of The Charter School East Dulwich, and he now works with the New Schools Network. 

CASSIE BUCHANAN OBE - CEO

Cassie joined the Trust as CEO in April 2020. A former Ofsted Inspector, Cassie Buchanan has, since 2012, been the Headteacher at Charles Dickens Primary School where she was pivotal in overseeing Charles Dickens’ role as the lead school for the London South Teaching Schools Alliance and led the establishment of the Charles Dickens Research School – a rare national accolade. 

Cassie is a National Leader of Education, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and brings with her a wealth of experience in leading collaboratively. Her focus, as the new CEO, will be on extending the sustainable delivery of the Trust’s mission of outstanding, inclusive education through effective collaboration with schools within the primary and secondary sectors, whilst supporting the continued excellent performance of our schools.

EMMANUEL AMADI MVO  – Member appointed Trustee and Member

Manny is a trusted adviser to some of the world's foremost companies and NGOs. He has been a consultancy leader for over ten years, following his earlier careers in the business and NGO sectors. He maintains a deep commitment to community and societal issues and has been directly involved with the Trust as both a parent and a governor in the past.

Manny was a part of the team which successfully bid for the opening of The Charter School East Dulwich in 2015.

KAREN ROBINSON  - Member Appointed Trustee 

 

Karen has been involved in school governance since 2007, including as a Trustee of Dulwich Hamlet Educational Trust. She has also served as the Chair of Governors at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School and Bessemer Grange Primary School and was a Governor at The Belham Primary School. Karen has worked in  HR Leadership roles in private sector corporations for many years. 

 

SIMON LATHAM - Member Appointed Trustee
 

Simon works for the Chief Executive of the City of London Corporation and lives locally in Peckham. He was previously a Trustee at Dulwich Hamlet Educational Trust and is currently the Chair of Trustees at Cambridge House, a social action centre based in South London, working to tackle poverty and social injustice in the local community. 

 

 

CLAIRE MAUGHAM - Co-opted Trustee 

Claire is Co-Chair of Governors at Charles Dickens Primary School and has been on the governing body since 2012. She works in corporate affairs, with senior experience in the charity sector and the civil service, and is currently the Communications Director at Houses of Parliament Restoration & Renewal. 

 

JONATHAN SLATER - Member Appointed Trustee

 

Jonathan left his role as Permanent Secretary of the Department for Education in 2020, and was previously the Director of Education in Islington. He has a  passion for the work that Academy Trusts do and hopes to bring his wide range of skills and experiences to benefit the children and families in all the Trust's schools. 

 

SIMON TUCKER – Co-opted Trustee

Simon works with governments and charities on innovation and new ventures. He is passionate about helping every child develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge to thrive as an adult. He has a child at the Charter School East Dulwich and was part of the group that set up the Charter School East Dulwich.

STEVEN RUSSELL – Member Appointed Trustee
 

Steven is a partner in PwC's restructuring practice, with nineteen years of experience in corporate change management, specialising in advising companies in turnaround situations.
